Can you have 2 consumer units?
You can certainly have as many CUs as you want. There is a BS 7671 regulation demanding that every installation has a (singular) “main switch”.
What is a dual split consumer unit?
What is a Dual Split Load Consumer Unit? Dual split load consumer unit contains a main switch breaker and two RCD’s to control two separate load points. These RCD’s will control and protect the circuits connected through associated single pole MCB circuit breakers.
Can you run a consumer unit off another consumer unit?
Yes it would be acceptable to run new circuits from a secondary CU. However rather than feeding the new CU from a spare way in your existing board it is best to split the incoming tails from the supply in to a henly block and run new 16mm tails from the henly block to your new board.
Can you have 2 fuse boards?
Some properties may have more than one switch if there is more than one fuse board installed. For example, if you heat your home with electric storage heaters, you’ll likely have a separate electricity board for them.
Do consumer units need split load?
The split load consumer unit is a safest panel box as compared to simple main switch, simple RCD type consumer unit or dual RCD’s consumer unit. It is because split load consumer units provide protection against overload, overcurrent & short-circuit and earth leakage.
Why do consumer units have 2 RCDs?
A ‘Dual RCD Consumer Unit’ is supplied with the main switch and two RCDs and offers a cheaper solution. Our image shows a typical installation with the two banks of MCBs protected from earth leakage by the RCDs. Consideration must be given to circuit design in this scenario.
Can I use an RCD as a main switch?
1 – can you use the RCD as a main switch for the installation – yes, all RCCB’s that meet BS EN 61008 are rated for isolation. 2 – should you be using a single front end RCD – again probably yes….See Also:

How many way consumer unit do I need?
If during the design the contractor defines 10 ways is required then at the very least fit a 12 way consumer unit. If a 12 ways is required then go for 15, if 16 go for 20 etc.
Can I install my own consumer unit?
Unless you are a qualified electrician, then you should not try to replace your own consumer unit. It is a legal requirement that this type of electrical work is carried out by a certified professional. Beyond that, if done incorrectly, you could injure yourself or put both your family and home at risk.
Why are consumer units split?
Can you mix RCD and RCBO?
Yes, but only if there is not already an 30mA RCD covering the section of busbar you are mixing them on, ie dual RCD or split load board. On a main switch only board mix and match as you wish.
Can you have 2 RCDs on the same circuit?
Hi, I have two 30mA RCDs in series, first one as the main switch in the house consumer unit covering all 11 circuits, second one as the main switch on a garage consumer unit, covering three circuits….See Also:

Does a consumer unit have to have a main switch?
The consumer unit is responsible for powering all the circuits in your home and is made up from various parts, such as: mains switch, residual current devices (RCD’s), and circuit breakers. You should always know where your consumer unit is located, in case of emergency and you need to turn it off or on.
Can you have 2 RCDs in series?
Where two or more RCDs are connected in series, selectivity will generally be achieved by selecting time-delayed characteristic(s) for the upstream device(s) and having a rated residual operating current of the upstream device of at least three times the rating of the downstream device (536.4. 1.4).
What are the different types of consumer units?
We will deal with the two main types of consumer unit found in the home today. The first one is a single load fuse board where the power coming in is taken through a double pole switch to a live bus bar. Each fuse, or MCB, is clipped onto a DIN bar and the “teeth” of the bus bar are inserted into the MCB’s.
What is a consumer unit in electrical wiring?
The Consumer Unit. The modern consumer unit is the centre, or heart, of the wiring system in the home. The unit distributes the electricity, via fuses of one kind or another, to the different circuits in the house.
Is a consumer unit a sub board?
Dont forget this includes the supply conductors to the secondary board. It is notifiable works. Well, a garage consumer unit is a sub board. Just a bit concerned you are thinking of doing this without knowledge of electrical design.
Can I add a secondary board to a garage consumer unit?
Long and short of it is yes you can. Making sure that along the way the cabling complies. Dont forget this includes the supply conductors to the secondary board. It is notifiable works. Well, a garage consumer unit is a sub board. Just a bit concerned you are thinking of doing this without knowledge of electrical design.
